ABOUT US
The Reading List started as an idea for a publication. It was going to be a small, independent literary paper (not a journal) that would spotlight all the different things going on in the city and focus on the undiscovered writers reading in the back rooms of bars. There were going to be articles, and features written, and perhaps even a few stories published; but theres something about writing about readings that just doesnt come through. One can write about a reading, but no matter how well an article is written it doesnt really capture the sounds an energy of a room full of people hearing the words the way the author meant for them to be heard. The laughs, and sighs, and the crisp thumps of hands clapping, the smell of beer and respectful whispers are nearly impossible to capture. Thus, The Reading List became an audio project.
The Reading List now has three functions.
1. A literary community bulletin board where special literary events can be listed in detail for free.
2. A platform for unpublished writers to record their work; bringing the local, back room bar readings to the world to hopefully helping a writer to be discovered by one of the 600 literary agents and publishers on our mailing list.
3. A virtual reading tour for published authors to record book excerpts for people to hear, in the event that a fan was unable to attend a live reading. Since publishers dont really send authors on book tours anymore, The Reading List enables people to listen to an excerpt of a book read by the author, and then link directly to a retailer for online purchasing.
The website was launched on July 3rd, 2009 and has been changing and evolving a little bit every day. Keep coming back checking out what were up to, and whom weve recorded. Who knows, you may discover you next new favorite writer.
Please feel free to send and suggestions or feedback they are VERY welcome and appreciated.
